FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. What is the deadline for application to 2010 programs? The application deadline for Intake 1 in Calgary has passed. We are accepting applicants for the Edmonton until January 29, 2010. Please note that the application deadline for Edmonton has been extended from January 15 to January 29. The Edmonton program is scheduled to start on April 5 pending funding.
2. How many applicants will be selected for this program? A total of 20 participants will be selected per intake. The number of intakes offered is dependent on funding.
3. How can I prove that I am a resident of Alberta ? Supply a photocopy of your driver's license or a company bill that includes your name and an Alberta address. Do not submit a bank statement.
4. Will I be required to find my own placement in a medical office or hospital for the practicum component? No, we will arrange a placement for you.
5. Is it possible for me to do my practicum placement outside of Calgary (i.e. Lethbridge , Red Deer , etc.)? Yes, we will do our best to place you in your area of choice within Alberta; however, you will still be required to attend classes on Fridays during the practicum placement.
6. Do I have to pay for this project? No, you do not have to pay for this program. The project is currently funded through Alberta Employment and Immigration (AEI) & Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) under the Enhanced Language Training Program Initiative.
7. Will I receive an honorarium to participate in this project? Unfortunately, no. You may be eligible for a loan through the Immigrant Access Fund. See the links page or click www.iafcanada.org for information on the Immigrant Access Fund.
8. Where is the program offered? The program is currently only offered in both Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta. We are willing to offer the program in other provinces; however, funding is required in order to do so.
9. Are accommodations provided for those participants that apply and that live outside of Calgary or Edmonton ? No, we do not have accommodations unfortunately for those outside of Calgary and Edmonton. However, we are able to send you some websites that offer short-term accommodations if needed. The project can also advertise your accommodations needs at the University if you wish for the project to do so.
10. Is it a full-time program? Yes. This is an intensive program and we are committed to assisting you to integrate into the healthcare system and to successfully meet the next steps towards licensure for practice in Alberta. We only accept applications from individuals who are available for the full 16-weeks. There is one week off between weeks 1-8 and 9-16. This is in between the classroom component and the work placement. During the classroom component, you are in class from 0900 to 1530 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays and from 0900 to 1200 on Wednesdays. We encourage you to make any necessary appointments on Wednesday afternoons in order not to miss class. During the practicum component, you will spend a minimum of 24 hours in the work place from Monday to Thursday and you will have a class on Fridays from 0900 to 1530. The schedule for the work placement varies as we have a variety of preceptors that participate in the program and their schedules will vary. We do our best to take your preferences into consideration when we place you with a preceptor.
11. How are participants selected? Applicants are required to meet the selection criteria. In addition to filling out the on-line application form, applicants must supply copies of the following documentation:
• A copy of your medical degree(s) obtained along with a translated version into English
• MCCEE results (Passing score required)
• MCCQE1 results (Passing score required)
• Proof of language proficiency requirements (i.e. one of the following CLBA, ELTPA, IB TOEFL, or IELTS)
• Permanent resident card (copy front & back) and/or citizenship card
